In the United States, at least 74 lawsuits have already been filed against Bayer by women who believe they have developed health problems as a result of taking Yaz or Yasmin. The problem is not confined to America. In Sweden, drug regulators recently launched an investigation into the death of a woman who was taking Yaz and whose death was caused by a pulmonary embolism.

Yaz and Yasmin, like many modern oral contraceptives, use a combination of two hormones, progestin and estrogen, to prevent pregnancy. Yaz and Yasmin differ from other contraceptives in the progestin the drug uses. Both Yaz and Yasmin contain 3 mg of the progestin drospirenone, but contain different amounts of the drug’s estrogen component, ethinyl estradiol. In August 2009, European researchers linked drospirenone to an increased incidence of potentially fatal blood clots.

Blood clots are extremely dangerous because of their ability to strike without warning with a fatal blow to the body’s most essential organs. Blood clots can quickly travel through the circulatory system and become lodged in the brain, lungs or heart. By obstructing blood flow, blood clots can cause heart attacks, stroke and death in otherwise health women.

In addition to the risk of blood clots, research indicates the progestin used in Yaz and Yasmin can cause dangerous levels of potassium. This condition, called hyperkalemia, can cause cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death in severe cases.

Federal drug regulators have twice admonished Bayer for overstating the benefits of Yaz and Yasmin while failing to inform consumers of the dangerous risks they carry. In February 2008 and again in March 2009, the FDA warned Bayer that its advertisements for Yaz and Yasmin violated the U.S. Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by minimizing the “serious risks associated with use of the drug.” Drug regulators also ordered Bayer to stop marketing Yaz for treatment of the symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) because it had not received approval for that purpose.

We think drug makers should be held accountable when they encourage consumers to take their products but minimize the serious risks associated with them. That’s why if you or a loved one has been sickened or injured as a result of taking Yaz or Yasmin, we will provide you with competent, effective representation and do everything we can to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve, including money for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
