South Carolina Serious Scarring Lawyers
Scars are tough, fibrous skin that grows over normal skin after any injury to the deep tissues of the body. Scarring takes place because although skin can repair itself, it cannot return itself to its original unblemished condition. All injuries, except very minor ones, produce some sort of scarring.
Scientists divide scars into four categories:
Hypertrophic scars are thick, raised red tissue that forms over the boundaries of the original wound.
Keloid scars are like hypertrophic scars, except that they keep growing outside of the area of the original wound. The resulting growths can be large and unsightly, requiring surgery or steroids to remove. They can also be itchy or painful. These tend to run in families, and are more common in people of African or Asian descent.
Contracture scars appear when the patient loses so much skin that the edges of the remaining skin pull together, held in place by hard, shiny scar tissue. This can damage the muscles and tendons below, limiting the patient's range of movement.
Atrophic scars are pits in the skin, often caused by chicken pox or acne.
Many scars are small and minor, and do not significantly affect a patient's appearance. However, other scars have long-term physical consequences that restrict their movement and ability to function normally. And those with injuries to the face, injuries that cover significant percentages of their skin or very serious injuries may end up with permanent, disfiguring scars that can change the way they live their lives. On meeting a seriously scarred individual, some people behave in an insensitive or judgmental way. Scarred people's appearances may even invite prejudice. For some patients, this can lead to crippling emotional trauma that makes it impossible to work, go to school or socialize normally. They may be healed, but the life they led before their accident has been lost forever.
Serious scars can be caused by burns, car wrecks, on-the-job injuries, cosmetic procedures, medical mistakes, unsafe consumer products, animal bites, construction accidents, chemical exposure and many more situations. If you or someone you care about has been seriously scarred by someone else's carelessness, you have the right to hold them legally responsible. You may be able to win compensation in court for your injuries, medical bills, pain and suffering and any permanent disfigurement or disability.
