In The NewsBill to Change School Bus Driver Requirements in South CarolinaMarch 21, 2006 A Bill was introduced to the South Carolina Senate today which underscores the need to have safer transportation throughout the state. Under the new laws, which would have to be ultimately approved by the Governor, school bus drivers would have to undergo strict physical examinations before taking a test to become a school bus driver. While many states already have such requirements in their laws, South Carolina laws regarding this issue remain uncertain. The need to have stricter requirements for school bus drivers comes at a time when focus on traffic accidents is a statewide priority. School bus drivers must not only be able to operate the school bus under strict state law but soon will have to undergo a series of medical examinations to ensure they are fit for the job. These examinations will have to be performed by an experienced and licensed medical practitioner and their results will have to be given to the hiring school district. In addition, the school bus drivers will be required to have a similar examination every two years. This will ensure that the driver will be able to perform their tasks and is not developing any physical impairment that may impede their job performance. Because they have to give the results of the physical before even undergoing license testing the applicants will not be able to be considered for the job without a clean bill of health. This new amendment will undoubtedly ensure that drivers of school buses can operate under emergency conditions, including inclement weather, other drivers and dealing with young passengers boarding and disembarking from the bus. South Carolina’s school bus accident rate is thankfully low. The accidents that do occur involving school buses can be particularly troubling, however, and often include other drivers or other factors outside the bus itself. Because each case involving a bus accident is different, an experienced South Carolina school bus accident attorney should thoroughly examine the elements of the case.
