The prescription drug Tequin (gatifloxacin) is an antibiotic, prescribed to help people fight infections like pneumonia, sinusitis and urinary tract infections. Unfortunately, hundreds of patients have found that it also has dangerous side effects, including seizures, strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. Despite these risks, Tequin’s manufacturer, Bristol Meyers Squibb, has refused to take it off the shelves of America’s pharmacies, putting millions at unnecessary risk of death and serious illnesses.

If you or someone you care about has been injured or killed while taking the prescription drug Tequin, contact the Louthian Law Firm today at toll free at 803-592-6231 or online for a free consultation.

The root of many of Tequin’s dangerous side effects is its tendency to drive patients’ blood sugar very high or very low, putting the millions of Americans who have diabetes or high blood sugar at special risk. Clinical trials conducted before Tequin was approved in 1999 demonstrated the blood sugar risks, as did several studies that took place after Tequin entered the market. More recently, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006 showed that patients taking Tequin ran 17 times the normal risk of dangerously high blood sugar and more than four times the risk of dangerously low blood sugar.

As a result, 20 people died between 2000 and 2005, according to the watchdog group Public Citizen; 159 more had to be hospitalized.

Tequin’s manufacturer, Bristol Meyers Squibb, announced in April of 2006 that it would no longer make the drug, and would transfer their rights back to the Japanese company that developed it. The FDA also announced in 2006 that Tequin labels must carry a “black box” warning cautioning patients about its effect on blood sugar in elderly people, diabetics, those with kidney problems and those taking medications that control blood sugar. But neither Bristol Meyers Squibb nor the FDA has issued a recall, despite the ongoing reports of serious and life-threatening side effects from Tequin. Instead, it has decided to allow existing stockpiles of the drug to be sold, choosing more profits over the health of consumers.
