Sponge Left in Abdomen, Patient Sues New Orleans Clinic

The Louisiana Record reports a lawsuit has been filed in federal court in New Orleans against Ochsner Clinic Foundation by a former patient over a surgical sponge left in his abdomen following surgery for rectal cancer.

In February 2010, the man had surgery to help treat rectal cancer and shortly after being discharged he began to have abdominal pain and anorexia.  A CT scan revealed there was a foreign body in his abdomen and he had to undergo a second surgery to remove the sponge.

According to his complaint, he has suffered several additional procedures, extensive treatment, infections and hospitalizations stemming from the sponge being left in his body.   He is asking for an award of damages for physical pain, mental anguish, emotional distress, extensive medical care, disability, medical expenses, physical impairment, depression, anxiety, interest and court costs.

The defendant is accused of failing to meet the applicable standards of medical care and for negligent actions in their diagnosis, treatment and care.
