Family Threatens Lawsuit Against Ole Miss in Son’s Death

Claiming Ole Miss was negligent in the death of their 20-year-old football player son last year, the family has sent a letter to the University of Mississippi as a 90-day notice they are planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit, reports wmctv.com.

“Buster” Abram was a high school football star who collapsed and died unexpectedly on the first day of practice last year.  Three weeks before his death, he tested positive for the sickle cell trait, and the lawsuit alleges the coaches and team physicians did not follow the safety guidelines for this condition put in place by the NCAA.  Athletes with the sickle cell traits should be able to play if they are handled appropriately.

The letter sent to the school asks for $10 million in damages for the family to resolve the claim. If the University doesn’t make a settlement offer in 90 days, the family will go forward with the lawsuit.

The University states they are confident the facts will confirm they followed proper procedures.
