Kentucky Nursing Home to Pay $43 Million Settlement
Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
A 92-year-old man died at what was previously known as Harborside of Madisonville Nursing Home after being a resident for only nine days. His family alleged he died of complications from dehydration and pressure ulcers which were caused by neglect.
According to McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, a Hopkins County Circuit Court jury agreed, finding the victim was not given enough water to survive, and awarded the family $40 million in punitive damages, $1 million for pain and suffering, and $1.75 million for the wife’s loss.
The facility, now known as Hillside Villa and Rehabilitation Center, plans to “vigorously challenge the decision through the appeal process.”
The size of the award against SunBridge Healthcare Corp., Sun Healthcare Group and Harborside Healthcare Group is thought to be influenced by the fact the center is owned by one of the largest for-profit operators in the country.
