Cancer Misdiagnosed As Lyme Disease

Florida’s Sun Sentinel reports a 45-year-old man who was diagnosed in 2004 with Lyme disease later learned he was suffering from a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that the cancer had spread.

His intravenous antibiotic treatments for Lyme disease made him so sick he had to leave work for three months.  Being treated for a disease he didn’t have, delayed his treatment for the cancer he did have.

His North Carolina doctor was brought before the N.C. Medical Board which disciplined the doctor for “unprofessional conduct.”  The board found the doctor had diagnosed Lyme disease in 10 patients based on “non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, achiness and decreased concentration” and “with scant or no supporting historical, physical, serological or other laboratory evidence.”  His license was suspended for a year in 2006 but offered to put the suspension on hold if he met certain conditions.
