$3.5 Million Settlement Reached In Bicycling Event Injury

The Arizona Daily Star reports Pima County and the organizers of El Tour de Tucson have reached a settlement of $3.5 million with a man who suffered brain damage in a bicycle crash in 2008.

On November 22, 2008, the 41-year-old man was injured when he and other bikers were struck by a car which turned onto a street and into the path of the bicyclists.  He suffered a life-threatening brain injury to his frontal and temporal lobes, had portions of his brain removed and spent 40 days in a coma.  He now suffers from epilepsy as a result of his injuries in the crash. He will never be able to return his former job.

The man’s wife and four other injured bicyclists sued the then 91-year-old driver, the organizers of the race-Perimeter Bicycling Associations of America, and the sheriff and deputy who were providing traffic control at the scene.  The lawsuit claims the deputy had manually adjusted the lights at the intersection so that all traffic had a green light and had also removed a cone intended to block traffic at the intersection.
