$12 Million Settlement in Medical Malpractice Suit
Tuesday, October 12th, 2010
The News-Castle, of central Illinois, reports a Champaign County judge has approved a $12 million out-of-court settlement for a woman who was left severely brain-damaged during her labor on December 27, 2002.
According to the lawsuit, the now 33-year-old woman was in labor at the Provena Covenant Medical Center when she was given an epidural injection that sent her into cardiopulmonary arrest. The equipment to respond to this situation was not in the room at the time and CPR was not started for at least 20 minutes. As a result of oxygen deprivation and the failure of the staff to resuscitate in a timely manner, she suffered irreversible brain injury, has no speech, and is completely dependent on others for her care.
A healthy baby boy was delivered by cesarean section.
The settlement is thought to be the largest in the history of Champaign County.
