Boating Accident Kills Five

CBS News reports five men are dead in Louisiana after their 24-foot aluminum boat ran under one end of a barge about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans.

The men had planned to take part in a weekend fishing tournament when their boat hit the moored barge late Wednesday night but the bodies were not found until Thursday morning.Investigators do not know if the barge was lit at the time of the accident. Apparently the men hit their heads on the barge’s slanting underside. Approximately 3,000 entered in the fishing contest, which began on Friday.

In the extremely unfortunate event that a loved one's death has resulted from a boating accident, you may have a wrongful death claim.

Deadly Boating Accident Caused by Improper Anchoring

The Associated Press reported in March the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s investigation concluded the deadly February boating accident involving two NFL players and their friends was caused by the boat being improperly anchored, causing it to capsize when one of the passengers tried to throttle forward to pry the anchor loose.

The commission also cited carelessness and operator inexperience as contributing factors. All the errors came at a time when a storm front was moving in, creating rough waters.

Of the four men on the boat, only one was rescued. After a three-day search of 24,000 miles of ocean, the Coast Guard called off the search for the three missing men.

Don’t allow the fun and excitement of the boating season to bring harm to yourself or a loved one. Always exercise the utmost care when operating in or around a boat.
