$5 Million Medical Malpractice Award for Wrong Diagnosis

The IndyStar reports a jury has awarded $5 million to a woman whose ruptured diaphragm was misdiagnosed as a urinary tract infection at Methodist Hospital in 2000. Her attorneys claim this happened through a series of miscommunications about her x-rays.

As her condition deteriorated, she saw more doctors looking for a correct diagnosis, the newspaper reports. Emergency surgery confirmed the ruptured diaphragm. The woman has had to have six more surgeries and expects further complications. She has to limit her food intake to avoid vomiting and she can no longer work.
